Coffee
Species

In nature we have are more than 80 different species of coffee, but only four are used to be marketed.

Coffea Arabica

is the best-quality coffee, probably originated in Ethiopia, this kind of coffee has a low content of caffeine and that is produced worldwide. Is grown mainly in South America but also in Asia and Africa. Among the best known variety we find: Moka, Bourbon, Maragogype, Caturla, Mundo Novo, Nacional.

Coffea Canephora

also known as Robusta is the original central Africa coffee; is just below the quality Arabica, but grows faster and contain more caffeine. This quality makes up a quarter of the entire world coffee production.

Coffea Liberica

from the forests of Costa d'oro, grows in tropical and subtropical zones, but due to variability of the quality the production is grown increasingly rare.

Coffea Eccelsa

this species has a performance very variable so it's more diffucult to commercialize; looks very similar to Robusta for its seeds and size and to Liberica for leaves and growth.

The Plant

la piantaThe coffee plant belongs to the Rubiacee family and can reach spontaneously, according to species, the height of 8-10 meters, but the plantations does not exceed eight feet in height.

It blooms only on soils rich grounds as the in volcanic ones in Central America, East Africa, Brazil, where the weather is warm and humid with an average temperature between 17 and 23 degrees.

The harvest times are determined by the concentration of the rains; the plant, blows a few weeks after rains. After seven-eight months from the formation of the fruit (a drupe), you can pick it up.

The History

history We meet the first references about the coffee around year 1000, in the description of the great Arab physician Avicenna.

The first scientific description, however, dates back to 1582 by Prospero Alpino, while later we start to have some legends about its discover: the most widely accepted born around 1671, year when the monk Antonio Fausto Nairone, in his treatise De Saluberrima potione, told that, around year 800, some Ethiopian shepherds discovered that sheep and goats that fed on this plant became irritable and euphoric.
